In Brunei Darussalam, tuberculosis or TB remains as one of the infectious diseases that requires attention. This was underlined by the Minister of Health in conjunction with the World TB Day. According to Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, control efforts will continue to be empowered to ensure the downward trend in cases can be maintained.
The Ministry of Health has enhanced its efforts and actions in controlling TB via several key initiatives. This includes strengthening and improving TB monitoring system; updating TB control guidance in Brunei Darussalam; and raising awareness among health professionals and the public on TB.
TB is a communicable disease that spreads through the air due to the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis bacteria. Among the TB symptoms that should be recognised are persistent coughing; fever; night sweats; loss of appetite; and weight loss. Those experiencing these symptoms are advised to get checked at nearby clinics to avoid serious complications including death. In addition, TB patients are also advised to adhere to the set treatment schedule to avoid drug resistance.
Efforts to eradicate TB by 2030 require support, cooperation and coordinated actions from all parties. This includes the role of family; colleagues; employers; penghulu and village heads; non-governmental organisations; and all levels of society in supporting patients undergoing treatment until they recover. The Ministry of Health will continue to ensure TB control services are more accessible and user-friendly, aside from enhancing collaboration among various parties. The World TB Day is celebrated every 24th of March, and is one of the global efforts to raise awareness and commitment in preventing and controlling diseases. This year's celebration theme was 'Yes, We Can End TB! Led by Countries, Powered by People", calling the communities to act boldly and unite in the efforts to eradicate TB.
